Chongqing Normal University Confucius Institute Scholarship
The Chongqing Normal University Confucius Institute Scholarship is funded by Hanban and administered by Chongqing Normal University. It supports non-Chinese citizens studying Chinese language, literature, history, philosophy, or teaching Chinese as a foreign language. It covers degree (bachelor’s and master’s), one-academic-year, one-semester, four-week, and ‘Chinese Bridge’ prize-winner programmes.

Overview
The scholarship is offered for multiple study formats: Master’s in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL), Bachelor’s in MTCSOL, one-academic-year study (11 months), one-semester study (5 months), and four-week programmes (June or September 2018). All programmes begin in September 2018 unless otherwise specified. The four-week and one-semester programmes exclude applicants already holding an X1 or X2 visa.
Coverage
The scholarship covers full tuition, accommodation (shared rooms, 2–3 students per room), monthly living allowance, and comprehensive medical insurance. Living allowance is RMB 2,500/month for undergraduate, one-academic-year, and one-semester students; RMB 3,000/month for MTCSOL students. Medical insurance costs: RMB 160 for four-week students; RMB 400 for one-semester students; RMB 800/year for one-academic-year and longer programmes.
Eligibility
Applicants must hold non-Chinese citizenship. Age limits: 18–35 years (or up to 45 for current Chinese language teachers; up to 25 for bachelor’s applicants). Applicants must be in good health and of good character. Language requirements vary by category: MTCSOL master’s requires HSK Level 5 (≥210) and HSKK Intermediate (≥60); bachelor’s requires HSK Level 4 (≥210) and HSKK Intermediate (≥60); one-academic-year Chinese language study requires HSK Level 3 (≥270) and HSKK Beginner (≥60); Chinese literature/history/philosophy requires HSK Level 4 (≥180) and HSKK Beginner (≥60); general Chinese study requires HSK Level 3 (≥180). Four-week programme applicants must apply in groups of 10–15 via their local Confucius Institute.
Application
Applications must be submitted online via the Confucius Institute Scholarship website (http://cis.chinese.cn) between 1 March 2018 and the relevant deadline. Recommending institutions review and endorse applications before submission to Chongqing Normal University. Final admission decisions are made by Hanban based on competitive selection. Results are announced approximately two months before term start.
Documents
All applicants must submit: a scanned copy of the passport data page; HSK and HSKK score reports issued within the last two years; a recommendation letter signed by the head of the recommending institution; a no-criminal-record certificate; a foreigner physical examination form; and a bank deposit certificate showing local currency equivalent to at least RMB 25,000. Degree applicants must also submit: certified highest education diploma (or proof of expected graduation) and official academic transcript; for MTCSOL, two reference letters from professors or associate professors; employment certification if currently teaching Chinese; and, for applicants under 18, documentation of entrusted legal guardianship in China.
