East China Normal University Confucius Institute Scholarship (Confucius China Studies Program）

Overview

East China Normal University hosts Confucius China Studies Program pathways supporting doctoral-level research and study related to China. The programme is administered by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation and delivered in partnership with ECNU.

Coverage

The Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship supports doctoral candidates registered at foreign universities to conduct research and write dissertations in China for six months to two years. The full-time Ph.D. plan supports enrolment in a doctoral programme in humanities or social sciences at a Chinese university.

Eligibility

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens. For the Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship, HSK Level 3 is required; for the full-time Ph.D. plan, HSK Level 5 is required. Current recipients of the Chinese Government Scholarship are not eligible for either track.

Application

Applicants submit an online application via the Confucius Institute Headquarters portal. After submission, printed application forms and supporting documents must be mailed to Confucius Institute Headquarters. The Confucius China Studies Program Expert Committee reviews applications and may conduct a video interview.

Documents

Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship applicants typically provide: proof of current Ph.D. registration at a foreign university, two recommendation letters, HSK transcript, abstracts of master’s thesis and/or publications and doctoral dissertation proposal, and a detailed research plan for China. A recommendation letter from a local Confucius Institute is preferred. Full-time Ph.D. applicants typically provide: undergraduate and graduate transcripts and diplomas (with certified Chinese translations), HSK transcript, abstract of master’s thesis, and any additional materials specified by Confucius Institute Headquarters.
