Overview
The scholarship is funded by the Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban to promote Chinese language teacher localization in South Asian countries. It supports three program types: Master of Arts in Chinese International Education (2 years), Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese International Education (4 years) or Foundation + Bachelor’s (5 years), and Short-term Intensive Chinese Language Training (11 months or 5 months). All applicants must be non-Chinese nationals.
Coverage/Benefits
Tuition and accommodation fees are fully covered. Master’s students receive a living allowance of RMB 3,000 per month; bachelor’s and language program students receive RMB 2,500 per month. One round-trip economy class air ticket is provided annually between the applicant’s home country and Shanghai. Health insurance and settlement allowance are not covered.
Eligibility
Applicants must be non-Chinese nationals from Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, Afghanistan, or Maldives. Master’s applicants must be aged ≤35, hold a bachelor’s degree, and achieve HSK Level 5 (180 points) and HSKK Intermediate (60 points). Bachelor’s applicants must be aged <25, hold a high school diploma, and achieve HSK Level 3 (180 points) and HSKK Intermediate (60 points). Language program applicants must have no prior study experience in China and meet specified HSK/HSKK scores depending on duration.
Application
Applicants must apply online via http://cis.chinese.cn, select a recommending organization (e.g., Confucius Institute, HSK test center, or Chinese Bridge organizer), and obtain online recommendation. Paper materials—including application form, passport copy, HSK/HSKK score reports (valid for 2 years), academic certificates, personal statement, and physical examination record—must be mailed to ECNU’s International Students Office.

Required documents include the Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form; scanned passport photo page; HSK and HSKK score reports (scanned, valid for 2 years); letter of recommendation from the recommending organization; proof of highest academic qualification and transcripts (notarized if not in Chinese or English); personal statement in Chinese or English; and the 'Record of Inspection of Each Foreign Human Body' completed in English with photo, physician signature, and hospital stamp.
