Overview
Northwest University (NWU) offers the Silk Road Scholarship to outstanding non-Chinese PhD candidates. Eligible programmes include geology, chemistry, life sciences, mathematics, geography, chemical engineering, computing, and other disciplines designated by NWU.
Coverage
The scholarship provides free on-campus dormitory accommodation, a monthly allowance of ¥3,500 per person for 12 months, and comprehensive medical insurance and protection for international students in China.
Eligibility
Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens aged over 18 and under 45, hold a master’s degree or higher, and have an average master’s score above 75%. Preference is given to those who graduated from internationally well-known universities at both undergraduate and master’s levels, and who have published papers or hold invention patents. Chinese-taught programmes require HSK Level 5; English-taught programmes require TOEFL ≥60 or IELTS ≥5.5 (exempt for native English speakers). Recipients may not hold another scholarship concurrently.
Application
Applications are accepted from 1 December to 15 March. Applicants must first secure an acceptance letter from an NWU supervisor. The online application is submitted via http://nwu.17gz.org. Clear electronic documents must be emailed to [email protected]; approved applicants then post two bound paper sets. Submitted documents are not returned.

Required documents: signed NWU Foreign Student Application Form; passport photo page; notarised highest diploma; academic transcripts; study or research plan of at least 800 words; two recommendation letters from professors or associate professors; photocopy of the Foreigner Physical Examination Form; valid language proficiency certificate; NWU supervisor acceptance letter (preferred); notarised non-criminal record; and any invention patents or published papers. Non-Chinese or non-English documents must be accompanied by notarised translations.
