The University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) 'The Belt and Road' Master Fellowship Programme is funded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to support up to 120 master’s students from Belt and Road countries. It covers tuition, a monthly stipend of 4000 RMB (including 1000 RMB from UCAS faculty/CAS institute), and mandatory Chinese language and culture training for up to one year, followed by research and thesis work for up to two more years.

Overview

'The Belt and Road' Master Fellowship Programme is part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) International Outreach Initiative. It supports up to 120 master’s students from countries along the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road to study at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) for up to three years.

Coverage

The fellowship includes: 1. Full tuition fee exemption by UCAS; 2. A monthly stipend of 4000 RMB (of which 1000 RMB is provided by UCAS faculty or CAS institute) to cover accommodation, local transport, health insurance, and other basic living expenses.

Duration

Funding lasts up to 3 years with no extension: 1. Up to 1 year of coursework and centralised training at UCAS, including 4 months of compulsory Chinese language and culture courses; 2. Up to 2 years of practical research and thesis completion at UCAS colleges/schools or CAS institutes.

Eligibility

Applicants must: 1. Hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent; 2. Demonstrate excellent academic achievement and commitment to scientific research; 3. Secure acceptance from a UCAS faculty member or CAS institute supervisor; 4. Be proficient in English or Chinese. Non-native English speakers must submit unexpired TOEFL (≥90) or IELTS (≥6.5) scores unless exempted (e.g., native English speaker, undergraduate instruction fully in English/Chinese, or New HSK Band 5 with ≥200 score); 5. Meet all UCAS master’s admission requirements.

Applicants must: 1. Confirm eligibility; 2. Identify and secure agreement from an eligible UCAS faculty or CAS institute supervisor; 3. Submit both admission and fellowship applications simultaneously via the online system at http://adis.ucas.ac.cn.

Required documents include: a) Valid passport (≥2 years validity, personal and validity pages only); b) Recent 2-inch full-face photo; c) CV with research experience summary; d) Original bachelor’s degree certificate; e) Original undergraduate academic transcript; f) Proof of English or Chinese proficiency; g) Detailed research proposal; h) Photocopies of title pages and abstracts of up to 5 published academic papers; i) Two signed reference letters (not from host supervisor), on official letterhead, with contact details; j) Foreigner Physical Examination Form.
