University of Chinese Academic of Sciences CAS-TWAS President’s Fellowship Programme for Doctoral Candidates

Overview

The CAS-TWAS President’s Fellowship Programme enables doctoral candidates from developing countries to pursue PhD studies in China for up to four years. Study includes up to one year of coursework and centralised training at UCAS or USTC — including four months of compulsory Chinese language and culture — followed by research and thesis work at UCAS/USTC colleges or CAS institutes.

Coverage

Awardees receive a monthly stipend of RMB 7,000 or RMB 8,000 (depending on qualification test results), tuition and application fee waivers, one inbound travel trip from home country to China, and a one-time USD 65 visa fee reimbursement upon arrival in China. Applicants already in China at time of application are not eligible for travel or visa reimbursement. Funding lasts up to four years with no extension.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet UCAS/USTC international student admission criteria, hold a master’s degree before the start of the fall semester (1 September 2018), provide evidence of intent to return to their home country after completing studies, and demonstrate English or Chinese language proficiency. Those currently enrolled in a doctoral programme at any institution in China are ineligible. Applicants may only apply to either UCAS or USTC — not both — and must secure supervision from only one host supervisor at one institute or school. Only one TWAS programme application is permitted per year.

Application

Applicants must first identify an eligible host supervisor at UCAS, USTC, or a CAS institute, then apply via the CAS-TWAS President’s Fellowship online system and separately submit an admission application through the UCAS or USTC online admissions system.

Documents

Required documents include: a valid passport with at least two years’ remaining validity; CV detailing research experience; original degree certificates (or official pre-graduation certificate); proof of English or Chinese language proficiency; original undergraduate and postgraduate transcripts; a detailed research proposal; photocopies of title pages and abstracts of up to five published papers; the Foreigner Physical Examination Form; and two reference letters.
