University of Science and Technology of China CAS-TWAS President's Fellowship Programme for Doctoral Candidates

The CAS-TWAS President’s Fellowship Programme at the University of Science and Technology of China supports non-Chinese doctoral candidates from developing countries. Funded jointly by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and TWAS, it covers full tuition and provides a monthly stipend of 7,000 CNY (before PhD qualification test) or 8,000 CNY (after passing), including accommodation, living expenses, local travel, and health insurance for up to four years.

Overview

The CAS-TWAS President’s Fellowship is a joint initiative between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and The World Academy of Sciences, hosted by the University of Science and Technology of China for doctoral candidates from developing countries.

Coverage

Full tuition waiver and a monthly stipend of 7,000 CNY (during coursework and language/culture training phase) or 8,000 CNY (during research phase after passing the PhD qualification test), covering accommodation, living expenses, local travel, and health insurance for up to four years.

Programs

All doctoral programmes offered by the University of Science and Technology of China are eligible.

Application

Applications were accepted from 15 December 2017 to 31 March 2018. Applicants had to submit via both the CAS-TWAS online system at http://www.fellowship.cas.cn/dms/aonline/1958.jhtml and USTC’s international admissions portal at http://isa.ustc.edu.cn/.

Documents

Required documents included the fellowship application form, valid passport, certified academic transcripts and degree certificates, two recommendation letters, a research proposal, CV/resume, abstracts of published papers (if any), proof of English or Chinese language proficiency, and a physical examination form.

  • Must not hold Chinese citizenship.
  • Maximum age 35 on 31 December 2018.
  • Must hold a master’s degree before 1 September 2018.
  • Must provide proof of English or Chinese language proficiency.
  • Must not hold any other concurrent employment or assignment during the fellowship.
  • Must return to home country upon completion.
  • Must not be currently enrolled in a PhD programme at any Chinese institution.
  • Must not apply to more than one Chinese university for this fellowship simultaneously.
