Fuzhou University, founded in 1958 in Fuzhou, Fujian, is a Double First-Class university with strengths in science and engineering alongside economics and the arts. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and welcomes international applicants on open degree pathways.

Minnan Normal University is a doctoral degree-awarding university in Fujian Province, located in Zhangzhou, a national historical and cultural city. Its roots go back to Songzhou Academy more than 1,300 years ago. Modern teacher education began with the Junior Normal College Class of Longxi Normal School in 1958, later becoming Zhangzhou Junior Normal College. Undergraduate education started in 1963 as Fujian Second Normal College. After several campus moves from 1977, it was renamed Zhangzhou Normal College in 1986 and Minnan Normal University in April 2013 (Ministry of Education approval). It became a Fujian First-Class Discipline Construction University in 2018, a National First-Class Program Construction University in 2020, and established doctoral programs and a new campus in 2021. The school motto is “Knowledge, Truth, Aspiration and Dedication.” More than 90,000 alumni work in education, government, business, culture, science, and technology. The university emphasizes Minnan (Southern Fujian) culture and teacher education, with undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral training linked to Minnan cultural studies. It hosts research bases such as a National Language Promotion Base, cross-strait language and culture centers, and other provincial think tanks and laboratories (including modern separation/analysis science and fungi industry engineering technology). It has cooperation agreements with universities in Britain, the United States, the Netherlands, Australia, and elsewhere, plus exchanges with universities in Taiwan and joint training projects. Campus life includes cultural clubs (drama, puppetry, Southern Tune, Jinge Opera, and others). Facilities for international students include dormitories with water heaters, air conditioning, and internet; restaurants, supermarkets, and sports facilities are on campus, with hospitals and shopping nearby. Xiamen University (XMU) was founded in 1921 by Tan Kah Kee, a prominent overseas Chinese leader, and was the first university in China founded by an overseas Chinese. It is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education, ranked among the top 20 of more than 2,000 Chinese universities and colleges, with strong international recognition. Campuses lie on either side of Xiamen Bay between hills and the sea. The university has a graduate school and 26 schools or colleges with 66 departments, plus 10 research institutes. It offers 83 undergraduate, 276 master's, and 187 PhD programmes. Full-time academic and research staff number over 2,500, including 23 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. Enrollment exceeds 40,000 full-time students: 20,314 undergraduates, 17,312 master's candidates, 2,956 doctoral candidates, and over 2,700 international students plus students from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. XMU was among the earliest institutions to develop overseas education, starting overseas correspondence education in the 1950s and accepting Chinese Government Scholarship students from 1981. Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University (FAFU) is a major higher education institution in Fujian with roots going back to the Agricultural Department of Fukien Christian College (1936) and Fujian Provincial Agriculture College (1940). It took its present name after the 2000 merger of Fujian Forestry College and Fujian Agriculture University. Located in Fuzhou, capital of Fujian Province. Over 2,300 faculty and staff, including more than 1,600 full-time faculty (about 800 full or associate professors). Structure: 23 colleges, 72 undergraduate majors across science, engineering, agriculture, economics, management, humanities, law, medicine, and related areas. Over 24,000 full-time undergraduates and about 4,000 graduate students. Eight post-doctoral research centers; eleven first-rate doctoral programs; 23 first-rate master’s programs; seven professional master’s programs. Also hosts a national science and biology center, a national key academic program, and a training center. Since 1978 FAFU has won 655 national and provincial science/technology and social achievement awards. It pioneered JUNCAO technology and has run 50 rounds of high-level international JUNCAO training for more than 1,662 trainees; the technology has been introduced to 87 countries )

Fujian Medical University was founded in 1937. It is one of the earlier public undergraduate medical universities in China, and a Fujian Province “double first-class” construction university with a medical-focused, multidisciplinary training system. It is jointly supported by the People’s Government of Fujian Province and the National Health Commission, and serves as a health talent training, medical research, and medical service center in Fujian. The university has two campuses, Qishan and Wushan, with a planned area of about 1,550 acres. It has 14,742 teaching and medical staff (including affiliated hospitals) and more than 18,000 full-time students. There are 1,664 full-time teachers (including clinical teachers); over 57.09% hold doctoral degrees and 68.63% hold senior professional titles. It has 53 national high-level talents and 2 winners of the Nightingale Medal. It has 4 national characteristic majors and 11 national first-class undergraduate major construction points; 6 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 2 doctoral degree authorization points, 9 first-level disciplines authorized for master’s degrees, and 9 master’s degree authorization points; 2 mobile postdoctoral research stations (clinical medicine and basic sciences), 4 postdoctoral workstations, and 2 academician workstations. Six disciplines—clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, chemistry, neuroscience and behavioral science, biology and biochemistry, and molecular biology and genetics—are in the top 1% of ESI global rankings. There are also 6 provincial first-class disciplines, including Clinical Medicine, Medicine, and Basic Sciences.

Xiamen University of Technology (XMUT), founded in 1981 alongside the Xiamen Special Economic Zone, is a public applied science and technology university with three campuses and more than 20,000 full-time students. It is a Tier One university in Fujian Province and has been described as one of the Top Ten Fastest Growing Universities in China. It offers nearly 50 programs with a faculty of over 1,000, including about 100 Chinese faculty with overseas study or work experience and about 50 teachers from 12 countries. Since 1995 it has enrolled about 400 students from Xiamen’s international sister cities and partner universities. XMUT maintains partnerships with universities worldwide and with about 190 businesses at home and abroad. Articulation arrangements allow students to continue toward degrees at partner universities abroad. Internships and employment with companies in Xiamen are available. Tuition is described as lower than many peer institutions, with Chinese Government Scholarships, Fujian Government Scholarships, and XMUT scholarships for overseas students.
