Hunan University of Arts and Science (HUAS) is a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary university with nearly 60 years of history. It is in Changde, a historic and cultural city with rail, airport, waterway, and expressway links. Changde has received awards such as National Civilized City, National Garden City, National Hygienic City, International Awards for Livable Communities, and National Traffic Management Model City. University of South China (USC) is in Hengyang, a historic city in Hunan Province, China. It is a comprehensive public university formed in 2000 by merging Hengyang Medical College (founded 1958) and Central South Institute of Technology (founded 1959). It is a first-tier (yiben) university on the Chinese mainland. It offers 74 bachelor’s programs, 170 master’s programs, and 18 doctoral programs. Xiangtan University is in Xiangtan City, Hunan, and operates under joint support of the Hunan Provincial Government and the Ministry of Education. It was among China’s first institutions authorized to award master’s degrees and among the earliest approved to enroll overseas students and national-defense students. Hunan Agricultural University (HUNAU) is a key provincial university co-constructed by the Ministry of Agriculture and the People’s Government of Hunan Province. It was among the first national experimental units in the Research Institute of New Rural Development (Ministry of Education and Ministry of Science and Technology) and was selected for the Project for Basic Capacity-building of Midwest Universities. In 2012 it gained first-level university status and may recruit first-class undergraduate students. The 2.27-square-kilometer campus is in Furong District, Changsha, with Donghu Lake to the north and the Liuyang River to the south. It has been recognized as an “Outstanding Unit” in a national teaching evaluation by the Ministry of Education, and as a “National Civilized Unit” and “Garden Unit.” HUNAU developed from Hunan Provincial Xiuye Agricultural and Forestry College (1903), was renamed Hunan Agricultural College in 1951 (name inscribed by Mao Zedong that November), and became Hunan Agricultural University in February 1994 with approval of the former State Education Commission. After more than 110 years, it is a comprehensive agricultural university awarding degrees in agriculture, engineering, liberal arts, sciences, economics, management, law, pedagogy, medicine, and the arts.
