Hunan University of Arts and Science

Changsha University of Science & Technology (CUST) is an engineering-centered multidisciplinary university covering engineering, science, management, economics, liberal arts, and law, with strengths in communications, electric power, and water conservancy. It is jointly established by the Central Government and Hunan Provincial Government, mainly under Hunan Province. Campuses: Jinpenling and Yuntang, totaling 210.56 hectares (about 3,158.4 mu) with 1,173,000 m² floor space. Fixed assets about 1.9 billion yuan (about US$ 291.1 million), including teaching and research equipment worth 285 million yuan. Library collection: more than 3,628,700 books. Gigabit campus network. Multimedia classrooms and language labs seat 16,642 students. Structure: 17 schools and departments; 1 post-doctoral workstation; 3 disciplines and 15 sub-disciplines for doctoral degrees; 18 disciplines and 104 sub-disciplines for master’s degrees. It may confer master’s degrees to applicants with equivalent academic attainments, plus master of engineering, MBA, and five other professional master’s types. It has 7 provincial/ministerial key disciplines, 21 provincial key specialties, 13 provincial/ministerial key labs, 7 provincial Philosophy and Social Sciences research bases, 6 provincial demonstration laboratories for basic courses, and 20 provincial excellent bases for educational practice.

University of South China (USC) is in Hengyang, a historic city in Hunan Province, China. It is a comprehensive public university formed in 2000 by merging Hengyang Medical College (founded 1958) and Central South Institute of Technology (founded 1959). It is a first-tier (yiben) university on the Chinese mainland. It offers 74 bachelor’s programs, 170 master’s programs, and 18 doctoral programs. It also runs two Ministry of Education special training programs: “Outstanding Engineers” and “Outstanding Doctors.” Teaching and research cover nine disciplines: engineering, medicine, management, sciences, economics, philosophy, law, literature, and art. USC is known nationally for medical and nuclear sciences and environment-related fields, and has trained many professionals in these and other areas. Central South University stands in Changsha, a historic city in south-central China. Formed in 2000 through the merger of three institutions—including a pioneering medical school founded in 1914—the university brings together strengths in mineral resources, materials science, medicine, civil engineering, and transportation. It offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programmes across eleven academic fields, with 31 colleges and institutes, a graduate school, and three top-tier affiliated hospitals. Around 52,400 students study here, supported by approximately 20,000 staff. The university hosts 24 postdoctoral research stations and maintains academic links with more than 200 overseas universities and research organisations.

Xiangtan University is in Xiangtan City, Hunan, and operates under joint support of the Hunan Provincial Government and the Ministry of Education. It was among China’s first institutions authorized to award master’s degrees and among the earliest approved to enroll overseas students and national-defense students. Its bachelor’s education was rated excellent in a Ministry of Education evaluation. Established in 1958, it was approved by the State Council as a key state university in 1978. On 17 December 2005, the Ministry of Education and Hunan Provincial Government agreed to provide joint financial support. The university has 20 faculties and teaching divisions; 72 bachelor’s specialties; 19 first-level master’s disciplines and 115 master’s programs; 4 professional master’s programs; 17 doctoral programs; 5 postdoctoral stations; 2 state key disciplines; and 13 provincial key disciplines.

Hunan Agricultural University (HUNAU) is a key provincial university co-constructed by the Ministry of Agriculture and the People’s Government of Hunan Province. It was among the first national experimental units in the Research Institute of New Rural Development (Ministry of Education and Ministry of Science and Technology) and was selected for the Project for Basic Capacity-building of Midwest Universities. In 2012 it gained first-level university status and may recruit first-class undergraduate students. The 2.27-square-kilometer campus is in Furong District, Changsha, with Donghu Lake to the north and the Liuyang River to the south. It has been recognized as an “Outstanding Unit” in a national teaching evaluation by the Ministry of Education, and as a “National Civilized Unit” and “Garden Unit.” HUNAU developed from Hunan Provincial Xiuye Agricultural and Forestry College (1903), was renamed Hunan Agricultural College in 1951 (name inscribed by Mao Zedong that November), and became Hunan Agricultural University in February 1994 with approval of the former State Education Commission. After more than 110 years, it is a comprehensive agricultural university awarding degrees in agriculture, engineering, liberal arts, sciences, economics, management, law, pedagogy, medicine, and the arts. It was formed in June 2016 by merging Shanghai Lixin University of Commerce and Shanghai Finance University. Its roots go back to Lixin education founded by Dr. Pan Xulun in 1928. In 2022, the School of Business and Administration received five-year full AACSB accreditation. SLU has three campuses in Pudong, Songjiang, and Xuhui, covering more than 1,200 mu (about 800,000 square meters).
