Xidian University

Founded in 1952, Xi'an International Studies University (XISU) was one of the first four foreign-language higher education institutions established in the People's Republic of China, and it remains the only government-run foreign-language university in northwest China. In recent years the university has broadened from a single foreign-language focus into an interdisciplinary institution covering literature, economics, management, law, engineering, and education, through teaching reforms and specialty adjustments. The campus covers about 1,593 mu, with roughly 550,000 square meters of floor space. Facilities include multimedia classrooms, language labs, computer labs, electronic reading rooms, campus computer networks, and satellite TV reception systems. Teaching equipment is valued at about RMB 39.4412 million. The library covers about 43,000 square meters and holds around 1.26 million books in Chinese and foreign languages, plus an electronic collection of academic journals and documents. XISU has 25 schools and faculties and 34 four-year specialties. Foreign Linguistic Literature is authorized to confer master's degrees, shared across thirteen related literature branches. The university also works with two foreign universities to train doctoral students. English, French, and German Linguistic Literature are major disciplines in Shaanxi; English, German, French, and Japanese are designated provincial top brand specialties

Northwest University, established in 1902 in Xi'an, is one of China’s oldest institutions of higher learning. Xi'an Jiaotong University, founded in 1896, is situated in Xi’an—a historic city that served as capital to thirteen Chinese dynasties. Its three campuses—Xingqing, Yanta, and Qvjiang—form a connected academic presence across the city. The university hosts nearly 30,000 full-time students, over half of whom are enrolled in postgraduate programmes. It offers a broad range of study options, including 82 undergraduate, 242 master’s, and 154 doctoral programmes. English-medium master’s degrees have been available since 2011, with fields such as management science, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering among those taught entirely in English. The clinical medicine programme for international students, launched in 1995, remains one of its longest-running English-language offerings.

Northwestern Polytechnical University is based in Xi’an, a city with deep historical roots as the seat of thirteen Chinese dynasties. Established in 1938, it has grown into a research-intensive university focused on science and technology, particularly in aeronautics, astronautics, and marine engineering. The university comprises 16 academic schools and delivers undergraduate, postgraduate, and postdoctoral programmes across technical and non-technical disciplines including humanities, economics, management, and law. It offers 54 undergraduate, 101 postgraduate, and 12 postdoctoral programmes. With over 28,000 students and more than 3,500 faculty members—including scholars from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering—NPU maintains a strong emphasis on technological innovation and interdisciplinary education. Its campus community reflects long-standing contributions to national scientific development since its founding.

Chang’an University (CHD) in Xi’an, founded in 1951, is administered by the Ministry of Education and is a Project 211 university. It is especially known for highway transportation and construction engineering, with broader engineering and related programmes. International students study on degree pathways across its Xi’an campuses.

Xi'an Shiyou University (XSYU) focuses on petroleum and petrochemical education and has a history of more than 60 years. Founded in 1951, it was the first institute in the People's Republic of China dedicated to training petroleum and petrochemical technicians, and it remains the only multidisciplinary university in northwest China with this focus. XSYU is authorized by the Ministry of Education to accept Chinese Government Scholarship students and is jointly sponsored by the Shaanxi provincial government and the three national oil corporations CNPC, SINOPEC, and CNOOC. It was among the high-level universities key-constructed and key-supported in Shaanxi’s Twelfth Five-Year Plan.
