Guangzhou Medical University (GMU), formerly Guangzhou Medical College, was founded in 1958. It offers graduate and undergraduate programs. The main campus is in downtown Guangzhou near Liuhua Lake Park and Yuexiu Mountain. A new campus of about 247 acres is in Panyu District near the Pearl River. GMU has 15 schools, including Basic Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Health Management, Public Health, Nursing, Graduate School, International Education, Dentistry, Kingmed College of Laboratory Medicine, General Practice and Continuing Education, Health Vocational and Technical College, and four clinical schools. Undergraduate programs (19 full-time): Clinical Medicine, Medical Laboratory, Medical Imaging, Nursing, Anesthesiology, Dentistry, Clinical Medicine of Integrated TCM and Western Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Pharmacy, Rehabilitation Sciences, Health Administration, Biomedical Engineering, Applied Psychology, Biotechnology, Biological Science, Law, Marketing, Statistics, Information Management & Information System, Food Quality and Safety. Graduate scale: 5 Level-I master’s programs; 35 Level-II master’s programs; 1 Level-I doctoral program; 1 postdoctoral research station. Clinical strengths: 5 state key clinical specialties and 39 provincial key clinical specialties.

Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine (GZUCM) was founded in 1956 and is one of the four oldest Traditional Chinese Medicine higher-education institutions in mainland China. It has two campuses — San Yuan Li and Higher Education Mega Center — totaling about 920,000 square meters, with 15 schools and 10 research institutions. Bachelor programs: 20 programs spanning medicine, engineering, administration, economics, arts, education, and related fields. Postgraduate: 46 master’s and 19 doctoral programs in Chinese Medicine, Chinese Herbal Medicine, and Integration of Chinese and Western Medicine; three postdoctoral centers. Enrollment: more than 20,000 students, including 14,692 undergraduates, 3,485 postgraduates, and 2,108 Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and overseas students.

Jinan University, founded in 1906, was the first Chinese institution dedicated to education for overseas Chinese. It is one of China’s One Hundred Key Universities and operates under the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council. It has 27 colleges, 59 departments, 178 research institutions, and 77 laboratories. As of April 2014: 46,750 students total — 10,471 graduates on campus (1,214 doctoral, 7,977 master’s, 1,280 on-the-job master’s), 20,718 full-time undergraduates, and 11,532 overseas Chinese, foreign, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan students. supervisors, 502 professors, and 690 associate professors. International links: more than 300 bilateral agreements or exchange relationships worldwide; active exchange with 43 countries plus Hong Kong and Macau; offices in Hong Kong and Macau and an education foundation in Hong Kong. South China Agricultural University (SCAU) in Guangzhou is a major agricultural and life-sciences university in southern China. Teaching and research cover agriculture, biology, engineering, economics, and related disciplines. International students join degree programmes tied to food, environment, and rural development themes.

South China Normal University (SCNU) in Guangzhou is a key normal university in Guangdong with strengths in teacher education and the arts and sciences. It offers undergraduate and graduate programmes and hosts international students across multiple schools.

South China University of Technology (SCUT) is a leading Chinese university under the direct leadership of the Ministry of Education and a member of Project 985 and Project 211. Located in Guangzhou near Hong Kong and Macau, SCUT has two campuses: Wushan (north) in Tianhe District, with hills, lakes, and greenery and mixed traditional/modern architecture; and University Town (south) in Panyu, with open landscaping and contemporary buildings. Founded in 1952, SCUT is a comprehensive university covering science, engineering, business, management, liberal arts, law, bio-medical science, and art design. It has 26 schools offering 79 bachelor’s, 193 master’s, and 107 PhD programs, and has produced over 290,000 graduates. Sun Yat-sen University (Zhongshan University) is in Guangzhou, south China’s largest city, near Hong Kong and Macao. Founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen (Zhongshan), it has more than 100 years of history and is a key multi-discipline university under Ministry of Education Projects 985 and 211, ranking among major universities nationally and at the top in South China. It has four campuses: Guangzhou South and North Campuses, Guangzhou East Campus (University Town), and Zhuhai Campus. There are 32 schools or colleges and 5 departments directly under the university. Undergraduate courses are offered in 102 subject areas; master’s degrees in 251 subject areas and doctorates in 180. There are 30 postdoctoral programs. The student body totals over 84,600, including over 32,000 bachelor’s students, nearly 10,300 master’s students, nearly 4,400 doctoral students, and other categories totaling up to about 35,951. The university receives Chinese Government Scholarship international students and self-funded international students. It has hosted international students since the 1950s. About 3,000 international students from over 100 countries study here each year
