Founded in 1953 in Harbin—a city on the banks of the Songhua River known for its winter climate—Harbin Engineering University evolved from the Harbin Military Engineering Institute. It is part of China’s national ‘211 Project’ and hosts a graduate school alongside a National University Science Park. The university focuses strongly on shipbuilding engineering, ocean exploration, and nuclear energy applications, with teaching and research shaped by this technical emphasis. Heilongjiang University is in Harbin, northeast China. Harbin is known for distinctive architecture, cool summers, winter skiing and skating, and its ice lantern festival. The area is known for standard Mandarin (Putonghua), which makes it a strong place to study Chinese. The university is a key comprehensive institution covering liberal arts, sciences, foreign languages, engineering, management, and more. The campus covers about 1,910,000 square meters, with nearly 1,160,000 square meters of buildings. Full-time enrollment is over 35,000, with about 5,000 students in master’s or doctoral study and about 2,000 international students each year. Northeast Forestry University, founded in 1952 in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, centres its academic identity on forestry and forestry engineering. It hosts sixteen schools and two departments, offering undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programmes across disciplines including agriculture, science, engineering, economics, management, law, and the humanities. With over 40,000 students and more than 1,200 full-time teaching staff—including seven academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering—the university maintains one of the largest academic communities in northeast China. Its library holds the most extensive collection in Heilongjiang, and its campus includes a provincial-scale gymnasium and swimming pool. Northeast Petroleum University (NEPU) is a national key university and a high-level key university of Heilongjiang Province, centered on engineering with programs in science, business administration, literature, law, and education. It was among the first universities authorized by China’s education authorities to admit international students. The main campus is in Daqing, Heilongjiang; a branch campus is in Qinhuangdao, Hebei. Daqing is a major oil city and home to China’s largest oil field (one of the world’s ten largest). Founded in 1960, NEPU has 2,216 staff and 23,025 full-time students. Programs: 64 undergraduate disciplines (8 national featured, 1 national comprehensive reform trial, 19 provincial); 4 postdoctoral research stations and 1 postdoctoral workshop; 21 doctoral disciplines; 89 master’s disciplines; professional master’s fields including MBA, social work, accounting, and engineering. In 2016, engineering entered the top 1% of ESI. Campus area: about 1,691,400 square meters (about 333,000 at the Qinhuangdao branch). Teaching and research equipment valued at over 500 million RMB. Campus network: 10 GB. Library: over 2,550,500 books. There is a national-level university science and research center.
