China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU) is the only higher education institution under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China. It trains people for foreign service, international studies, and careers linked to international business and law. It was founded in 1955 on the suggestion of Premier Zhou Enlai. Accredited by the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council, CFAU offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. Strong subjects include Diplomacy, International Relations, and International Law. Over more than 50 years, CFAU has graduated nearly 20,000 students who have worked in diplomacy, foreign affairs, and international studies. In 2014, more than 2,000 full-time Chinese students were enrolled. The university is often called the “Cradle of Chinese Diplomats.” In the 1950s, many international students from Eastern European countries trained at CFAU; some later held senior diplomatic posts or worked in international studies. CFAU resumed international enrollment in the 1980s. In 2014, more than 170 international students from over 40 countries were enrolled. Entrusted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce, CFAU has long run professional programs for foreign diplomats and media professionals, covering Chinese language, international relations, diplomacy, China’s national conditions, and media. From 1994 to the end of 2013, more than 2,800 participants from 150 countries joined these programs.

China Medical University (CMU) was among the first Chinese medical schools authorized by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to recruit international students. It is also authorized by MOE to teach medicine in English for international students. CMU began recruiting Chinese Government Scholarship students in 1976 and started an English-medium MBBS program in 2005. An America Class MBBS track began in 2010 for students who already hold a U.S. bachelor’s degree. There are more than 400 international students from the United States, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Europe. Levels include doctoral (Chinese), postgraduate (Chinese), undergraduate (English, Chinese, and Japanese & Chinese), and visiting students (Chinese). International medical education was first managed by the International Exchange Center. In 2010, the International Education School was set up to handle admission, teaching, and student services. The English-medium MBBS program is described as well developed within China. With a new campus and improved teaching and living conditions, CMU plans to gradually increase international enrollment

China Pharmaceutical University (CPU) is in Nanjing. It began as the National Pharmaceutical School in 1936 and was China’s first independent school of pharmacy. It remains a leading pharmacy university with many specialized fields. It is a “211 Project” key university under the Ministry of Education. 1 and Traditional Chinese Pharmacy ranks No. 3 CPU was among the earliest institutions authorized by the Ministry of Education to admit full-time pharmacy students and visiting scholars from overseas. It hosts Chinese scholarship students and has recruited international students since the 1950s. Structure: 6 schools (Pharmacy; Traditional Chinese Pharmacy; Life Science and Technology; International Pharmaceutical Business; Continuing Education; Higher Vocational Education), 4 independent departments (Basic Sciences; Foreign Languages; Social Sciences; Physical Education), and 23 key labs and centers at state or provincial level. For international students, CPU offers 22 bachelor’s, 33 master’s, 26 doctoral, and 23 post-doctoral programs in Chinese, plus English Pharmacy programs, visiting student and visiting scholar programs, Chinese language programs, and 6 short-term training programs

China Three Gorges University (CTGU) was founded on 29 June 2000 with Ministry of Education approval, merging the former Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering (Yichang) and the former Hubei Sanxia College. Institutional history dates to 1946; bachelor education began in 1978; postgraduate and international student education began in 1996. CTGU may confer bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees and recruit CSC scholarship international students. In 2009, the Ministry of Water Resources and Hubei Provincial Government agreed to jointly build CTGU. It received Hubei’s “Advanced unit of opening up” award in 2010 and “Demonstration base of international student education” in 2014. It is described as a comprehensive university with strengths in hydropower-related disciplines. CTGU has 29 colleges and 70 undergraduate programs across science, engineering, medicine, arts, economics, management, law, education, and fine arts. It has 5 national-level characteristic undergraduate disciplines, 10 provincial branded undergraduate disciplines, 7 disciplines in the Ministry of Education “Outstanding Engineers” plan, and 8 disciplines taught in English. Graduate study: 2 primary-discipline doctoral programs, 20 primary-discipline master’s programs, 130 secondary-discipline master’s programs, and 12 professional master’s programs (engineering, MBA, MTI, etc.). There are 11 provincial key primary-discipline programs.

Founded in 1952 and based in Wuhan, China University of Geosciences specialises in Earth sciences while maintaining a broad academic structure across science, engineering, humanities, social sciences, and education. It delivers integrated undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral training through 19 colleges offering 57 bachelor’s, 106 master’s, and 37 doctoral programmes. The university hosts national and provincial key laboratories and engineering centres, supported by around 1,300 academic staff—including nine members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Its campus features comprehensive teaching facilities, extensive library and museum collections, and accommodates approximately 20,000 full-time students, including over 500 international degree-seeking students. CUG has welcomed overseas learners since the 1980s and currently hosts more than 400 international students enrolled in degree programmes, alongside short-term and exchange visitors each year.

China University of Mining and Technology was founded in 1909 and is based in Xuzhou, a city in northern Jiangsu province known for its natural setting and urban infrastructure. It operates as a national key university under the direct administration of China’s Ministry of Education and participates in the ‘211 Project’ and the ‘985 Innovation Platform for Advantageous Disciplines’. The university offers undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programmes across engineering, sciences, humanities and social sciences, with particular academic focus on mining and safety engineering—both designated National Double First-class Construction Disciplines since 2017. Its campus hosts over 23,700 students, including more than 650 international students from 69 countries. CUMT maintains teaching and research activity across multiple schools and institutes, supported by facilities aligned with its long-standing disciplinary emphases.

Founded in 1953 and based in Beijing, China University of Petroleum has grown into a national university focused on energy science and engineering. It operates sixteen colleges offering undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programmes across petroleum engineering, geosciences, mechanical and electrical engineering, environmental science, and emerging areas including clean energy and energy policy. The university hosts two national key laboratories and over twenty ministerial research institutes, supporting work in deep-water technology, safety engineering and sustainable energy systems. Its academic staff includes nearly 1,400 teachers, among them professors and researchers recognised by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. With more than 15,000 students—including over 800 from abroad—the university maintains strong ties with major energy enterprises worldwide. Its campuses combine long-standing expertise in oil and gas with expanding engagement in broader energy transitions.

Founded in 1953 and based in Beijing, China University of Petroleum (Beijing) is a national key university under the Ministry of Education. It operates across 16 colleges and delivers undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programmes in energy-related disciplines, with growing emphasis on sustainable energy, deep-water technology, environmental engineering and energy policy. The university hosts two national key laboratories and over twenty ministerial research institutes, supported by a teaching staff of 1,369, including professors and associate professors. Its student body includes more than 14,000 degree candidates from across China and 832 international students representing 52 countries. CUPB maintains long-standing academic and research ties with major global energy enterprises. It offers 27 bachelor’s, 99 master’s and 48 doctoral programmes.

Founded in 1952, the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) is a Beijing-based institution with two campuses: Xueyuan Lu in Haidian District and Fuxue Lu in Changping District. It evolved from the merger of law, political science, and sociology departments formerly housed at Peking University, Yenching University, Fu Jen Catholic University, and Tsinghua University. CUPL offers undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programmes across law, political science, philosophy, economics, management, history, and education. The university comprises 19 schools and departments, alongside 10 university-level research institutes. With around 15,000 full-time students—including over 800 international students—and more than 800 academic staff, CUPL maintains a focused presence in legal and social sciences education. Its post-doctoral research centre supports advanced scholarly work in these fields.

Chinese Language Institute (CLI) is a Mandarin language school known for immersive study in Guilin and related programs for international students. Courses typically include intensive Mandarin, private tutoring, and cultural immersion rather than university degree pathways.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), founded in 1963, is a research university in Hong Kong known for its college system and multicultural academic community.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong Business School, based in Hong Kong, develops global business leaders through rigorous programmes, research, and industry engagement.

Chongqing Medical University (CQMU) was founded in 1956 and grew out of Shanghai First Medical College (now part of Fudan University). It is a comprehensive medical university offering bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral programs. It was among the first universities approved by the Ministry of Education to accept international students for English-taught medicine. Since 2001, it has accepted over 1,000 international students from more than 30 countries and regions. It is listed in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools and recognized by ECFMG (USA). Faculty have led more than 500 research projects and won over 110 science and technology awards. CQMU operates a national engineering research center and a national bio-industry base experimental animal center. Enrollment is about 28,000 students: over 20,000 undergraduates, about 5,000 postgraduates, and over 650 international students. Four nationally ranked key disciplines: infectious diseases, pediatrics, clinical laboratory diagnostics, and neurology. CQMU has 19 colleges and departments, a graduate school, a life sciences institute, about 1,400 professors and associate professors, and over 200 PhD/MD supervisors. It offers 24 bachelor specialties, including clinical laboratory medicine, pediatrics, and nursing (nationally ranked). It has 6 affiliated hospitals with 8,900 beds and over 7,000,000 outpatient visits each year.

Chongqing University (CQU) is a key national university directly under the Ministry of Education. It is a “211 Project” and “985 Project” university with support from central and local government. Founded in 1929, CQU has 28 colleges, plus the Graduate School, the City College of Science and Technology, the College of Continuing Education, and the College of Networking Education. Total enrollment is about 50,000: about 20,000 master’s and doctoral students and 30,000 undergraduates. The university has 24 postdoctoral mobile stations, 133 doctoral programs, 256 master’s programs, 18 professional master’s programs (including MBA, EMBA, MPA, and master of engineering), and 89 bachelor’s programs across science, engineering, liberal arts, economics, management, law, agriculture, and education. Staff: about 5,400 faculty and staff, including about 2,700 full-time teachers; 3 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 12 contracted members from other institutions; 6 members of the Subject Appraisal Team of the Degree Committee under the State Council; 4 chief scientists of the National 973 Project; 4 state-level middle-aged or young experts with distinguished contribution; 500 doctorate supervisors; and 1,700 full professors and associate professors. CQU has exchange links with over 100 higher education institutions in about 20 countries, including the USA, England, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Australia, Holland, Japan, South Korea, and Russia.

Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications was established in 1950 and sits on the Nanshan hills in Chongqing. It specialises in information and communications technologies, with schools covering telecommunications engineering, computer science, automation, and management science. The university has awarded degrees to more than 90,000 graduates since its founding. Its academic staff include researchers and engineers with experience across national and international technical institutions. CQUPT offers undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programmes, with a particular emphasis on applied research in digital infrastructure and systems engineering.

Chongqing University of Science and Technology (CQUST) is a full-time public university with a history of over 60 years. It focuses on engineering—especially petroleum, chemistry, metallurgy, materials, mechanics, electronics, safety, and environmental protection—while also covering sciences, economics, management, law, humanities, and arts. Campus area is about 140 hectares with about 530,000 m² of construction. Teaching facilities are valued at about 260 million RMB. The library (over 42,000 m²) holds nearly 2.26 million books plus digital resources. Staff: 1,546 total, with over 1,100 full-time academic faculty; one Chinese Academy of Science academician and one Chinese Academy of Engineering academician; 541 professors and associate professors; 231 doctoral degree holders. Enrollment is about 20,000. Recent graduate employment rates have stayed above 90%. The university partners with over 30 colleges/universities at home and abroad, and has strategic industry–academia agreements with more than 100 enterprises, including CNPC, SINOPEC, CNOOC, Wuhan Iron & Steel, SWA, Chongqing Iron & Steel, Covanta Energy (USA), and the International Association of Drilling Contractors (USA).

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK / CityU) is a public research university in Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong. It began as the City Polytechnic of Hong Kong in 1984 and became a university in 1994. English is the medium of instruction. The campus hosts over 20,000 students from Hong Kong, mainland China, and more than 80 other countries and regions, with a highly international faculty profile. CityUHK emphasizes professional education and research and maintains hundreds of exchange partners worldwide; it has been ranked among the world’s most international universities by Times Higher Education in recent years.

The Communication University of China (CUC) is a “Project 211” key university under the Ministry of Education. It began in 1954 as a training center for technicians of the Central Broadcasting Bureau. In April 1959 it became Beijing Broadcasting Institute (approved by the State Council). In August 2004 it was renamed Communication University of China. It is in east Beijing near the Old Canal, on 473,000 m² of land with 383,000 m² of construction. Motto: integrity, professionalism, erudition, and competence. The university focuses on media and information communication fields and is widely known for radio and television training.

Dalian Jiaotong University (DJTU) was founded in 1956 as Dalian Railway Vehicle Manufacturing School. In 1958 it became Dalian Railway Institute under the Ministry of Railways. In February 2000 it moved under Liaoning Province with co-construction by central and local authorities (mainly local management). In May 2004 the Ministry of Education approved the current name. The university focuses on railway transport and interdisciplinary software talent training. Campus area: 862,000 m² across two campuses in Shahekou and Lushunkou Districts of Dalian. Building area: 555,000 m². Teaching instruments and equipment valued at RMB 260 million. Library: 43,000 m², with 1,402,321 document volumes and 22,247 kinds of Chinese and foreign electronic journals. Structure: a Graduate School and 13 secondary schools awarding bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. Degree capacity includes 2 mobile post-doctoral stations for first-level disciplines, 2 first-level doctoral programs, 7 second-level doctoral programs, 12 first-level master’s programs, 44 second-level master’s programs, 9 engineering master’s fields, and 2 master’s majors for university teachers. Provincial first-level key disciplines: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, and Transportation Engineering (covering 12 second-level disciplines). Undergraduate: 51 majors across Engineering, Management Science, Natural Science, Literature, Economics, Law, and Arts.

Dalian Maritime University (DMU) was founded in 1909. It is a major maritime university and the only key maritime institution under China’s Ministry of Transport. It is recognized by the International Maritime Organization as a center for maritime education and training. Programs: 6 post-doctoral research centers, 6 primary-discipline doctoral programs, 32 subordinate-discipline doctoral programs, 18 primary-discipline master’s programs, 97 subordinate-discipline master’s programs, and 51 undergraduate programs. About 19 teaching and research units include Navigation College, Marine Engineering College, Information Science and Technology College, Transportation and Management College, Environmental Science and Engineering College, Transportation Equipment and Ocean Engineering College, Law School, Foreign Languages College, Public Management and Humanities College, Department of Mathematics, and Department of Physics. About 20,000 students. More than 90,000 graduates have been trained at DMU, many working in China’s shipping industry. Facilities include maritime science buildings, a survival training center, harbor basin, library, swimming pool, planetarium, a training dock, over 100 laboratories (including a full-mission ship-handling simulator and an engine-room simulator), and two ocean-going training vessels

Dalian Medical University was founded in 1947. The campus has a long coastline and a natural bathing beach. After decades of development it is a multi-disciplinary medical university that also offers science, engineering, management, arts, and law alongside medicine. About 14,700 students, including 4,100 postgraduates and 1,300 international medical degree students. More than 7,500 teaching faculty and medical staff, nearly 1,100 doctoral and graduate supervisors. Three directly affiliated hospitals in Dalian with more than 5,200 beds. The university works with 109 universities and 38 research institutions in 39 countries and regions. It received an A-level rating in undergraduate teaching quality from the Ministry of Education and was among the first 30 universities authorized to teach undergraduate medicine in English. It is listed by the WHO, and degrees are recognized in many countries

Dalian Neusoft University of Information is an undergraduate university founded in 2000 by Neusoft Group, a major IT solutions and service provider in China. About the founder, Neusoft Group: It was the first listed software company in China. Its work covers smart cities, healthcare, intelligent vehicle connectivity, and enterprise digital transformation. In healthcare, it provides core hospital information systems (HIS), electronic medical records (EMR), and related solutions to over 70% of China’s Grade 3A (top-tier) hospitals, and has long supported national social insurance and medical security information systems serving hundreds of millions of people. It was the first Chinese software enterprise to achieve both CMM5 and CMMI Level 5. It has subsidiaries or R&D centers in the United States, Japan, Europe, the Middle East, South America, and other regions, serving tens of thousands of clients worldwide.
